The Most Popular Cosmetic Surgery Procedures in The UK

According to figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, plastic surgery procedures are on the rise, despite the recent recession. In fact, more than 38,000 cosmetic procedures were performed in 2010. Overall, women made up 90% of those procedures, with a staggering a 34,413 cosmetic procedures performed over that period. In early 2009 MYA surgery was included in the Yorkshire post with a statistic claiming a 25% increase in inquires compared to the year before. And in particular, the following five have shown to be particularly popular.

Breast augmentation:
Of all the cosmetic procedures performed on UK women in 2010, breast augmentation, or “boob jobs” were by far the most popular. From implants to reshaping and reconstruction, the boob job is still well in demand. A whopping 9,418 women had their breasts enlarged last year, with the most popular size being a D cup. It seems society's fascination with large breasts shows no sign of coming to a close.

Eyelid surgery:
Blepharoplasty, otherwise known as an “eye lift” was 2010's second most popular procedure for women in the UK, and 5,127 procedures were performed that year. Excess tissue around the eye is carefully removed and surrounding tissue is sometimes repositioned to achieve the desired look. While upper eyelid surgery can sometimes be done for medical reasons, lower eyelid surgery is generally done for cosmetic reasons, removing the unpopular “bags” under the eye for a fresher appearance.

Face/neck lift:
Many women look to fight off the signs of aging, and anti-wrinkle creams are often not enough to achieve the desired youthful appearance. A face lift is the third most popular procedure for UK women in 2010, with 4,493 having a face or neck lift. The face or neck has excess skin removed, and the remaining skin pulled taut, using careful incisions in inconspicuous areas where scarring is less likely to be obvious.

Breast reduction:
In Britain, the average cup size is getting larger, and more women are taking to surgery to reduce their bust. Back pain, poor posture and general discomfort are the biggest factor in breast reduction surgery, with 4218 women opting for the procedure last year.

Rhinoplasty:
The fifth most popular procedure for women in 2010 was the nose job, or rhinoplasty, to give its technical name. Following in the footsteps of many celebrities, as many as 4,207 women opted for a new nose last year. Surgeons correct and reconstruct the nose by manipulating the cartilage and supporting tissue to reshape the patient's nose in a way they prefer.
