Iron Deficiency(Anemia) in Children
Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in children aged 2 to 5 years is caused by defeciency in iron and Vitamin C.
Symptoms include paleness of skin, inner lower lip, palm, nail beds and the inner mucous membrane lining the inner surface of the eyelids. Anemics suffer from feeling weak and tired, dizzy and having poor physical and mental development. Children with IDA, the World Health Organization and the UNICEF recommend that children 2 to 5 years old should be given 2mg of iron ferrous sulfate per kilogram of body weight daily.
Iron-rich sources include seafoods, red mung bean, seaweed, Chinese celery (kinchay), dried saffron flowers, slender or spineless amaranth, dried banana blossoms, and jute leaves.
