Zollinger Ellison Syndrome - Symptoms & Treatment
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is a state in which one or more tumors form in the pancreas or in the superior part of the small intestine (duodenum). It can also cause ulcers to acquire in the stomach and the duodenum. Generally, the cause is a tumour of the pancreas producing the hormone gastrin. This then causes an immoderate production of stomach acid, which can lead to peptic ulcers. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is rare, and al though it may happen at any age, people between the ages of 30 and 60 are more likely to develop it. Also, of all the people who suffer with a peptic ulcer, only a tiny portion of those people will have Zollinger-Ellison. The tumors are cancerous in 50 percent of the cases. They ensconce a hormone called gastrin which causes the stomach to produce too much acid, that in return causes stomach and duodenal ulcers. What causes people with ZES to develop tumors is mysterious, but approximately 25 percent of ZES cases are associated with a genetic disorder called multiple endocrine neoplasia. The symptoms of ZES include symptoms of peptic ulcers gnawing, burning pain in the abdomen; diarrhea; nausea; puking; fatigue; weakness; weight loss; and bleeding. Physicians diagnose ZES through blood tests to admeasure levels of gastrin and gastric acid secretion. They may surcease for ulcers by doing an endoscopy, which involves looking at the lining of the stomach and duodenum through a lighted tube. The primary treatment for ZES is medication to reduce the composition of stomach acid. Proton pump inhibitors which muffle acid production and promote healing are the first line of treatment and include lansoprazole, omeprazole, pantoprazole, and rabeprazole. H-2 blockers such as cimetidine, famotidine, and ranitidine may also be used, but are less effective in degrading stomach acid. Surgery to treat peptic ulcers or to remove tumors in the pancreas or duodenum are other rehabilitation alternatives. People who have been doctored for ZES should be monitored in case the ulcers or tumors recur.
Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome is a rare condition which causes acute stomach ulcers. It is individualized by tumors (gastrinomas) in the body. - ZES is caused by a non–beta islet cell, gastrin-secreting tumor of the pancreas which instigates the acid-secreting cells of the stomach to maximal activity, with resultant gastrointestinal mucosal ulceration.
- ZES may occur intermittently or as part of MEN 1.
