Jaundice is a yellowish discolouration of the skin and of the whites of the eyes caused by aberrantly high levels of the pigment bilirubin in the bloodstream. The yellow pigment is from bilirubin, a byproduct of old red blood cells.

Jaundice commonly appears in a 'top to bottom' procession (starting with the face, progressing toward the feet), and dissects in a 'bottom to top' manner. A common condition in newborns and caused by exessive bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is produced by the normal breakdown of red blood cells.
