Medications or drugs, such as alcohol, narcotics, antibiotics, chemotherapy medications used to treat cancer, and a diabetes medication known as metformin. Other causes of appetite loss include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and sedative medications (drugs that cause feelings of calm or sleepiness). If practicable, the first step in treating appetite loss is to treat the underlying cause. Family members should try to supply preferred foods to help stimulate the person's appetite. Proper control of diabetes can prevent cases because of this cause. Eating well can also help a person better cope physically and emotively with the effects of cancer and cancer treatment.

Drink a glass of sherry or wine prior to a meal to help increase appetite. If your sense of taste is dwindled, try adding spices and condiments to foods to make them more appealing. Drink fluids between meals rather than with meals. Drinking during a meal can make you feel full too frequently. Pick nutritious drinks, such as milk, milkshakes, and juices.
