Pelvic Inflammatory Disease - Symptoms & Treatment


Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a charactirized spectrum of infections of the female genital tract that includes endometritis, salpingitis, tuboovarian abscess, and peritonitis. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease generally refer to the genital area in women with inflammation and infection. It can affect the uterus (womb), fallopian tubes (tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus), ovaries, and other organs related to reproduction. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease may affect a woman's health severely and create complicated problems in every aspect.

Symptoms of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Symptoms of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease include fever, unusual discharge that may have a foul odor, painful urination, irregular menstrual bleeding, and pain in the right upper abdomen (rare), other symptoms are :

  • Pain in abdomen
  • Pain during urination
  • High fever
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Severe pain in the upper abdomen
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • endometrium, the lining of the uterus

Causes of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

The main cause of Pelvic inflammatory disease is infection of germs such as Gonorrhoea and Chlamydia trachomatis. It is generally found in womens, between ages 15 to 25.

Treatment of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

For the treatment of Pelvic inflammatory disease oral antibiotics medicines are prescribed. PID can be cured with several types of antibiotics.The traetment listed are below:

  • PID can be cured with antibiotics.
  • Surgery is necessary to be done with long medication to cure the disease.
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs such as steroids may be prescribed by the doctor to reduce the scarring and inflammation.
  • PID is usually treated with at least two antibiotics that are effective against a wide range of infectious agents.
  • Hospitalization may be recommended if you are very sick with PID, or if you are pregnant, under the age of 18 or have the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
