Myxoid Cysts - Symptoms & Treatment


A myxoid cyst is a soft rubbery nodule, skin colored or translucent and usually occurs near the end of the fingers or toes. Myxoid cysts sometimes cause a groove to form in the nail and at times are painful. Myxoid cysts are usually 1/4 to 3/4 inches in size. The cyst has a smooth shiny surface and is to be found at the base of the nail. It often causes a groove in the nail, a few millimetres across which extends the length of the nail. The cyst's size may vary. Jelly-like sticky fluid may be expressed from it (sometimes tinged with blood). A mucous or myxoid cyst arises from degeneration in the connective tissue on the top of the last segment of the finger. It may connect with the joint at the end of the finger. Myxoid cysts sometimes cause a groove to form in the nail and at times are painful.

Myxoid Cysts is basically a skin disease typical to youth, but Myxoid Cysts may occur to the people at any age. Myxoid cysts are described as a nodular lesion usually overlying a distal interphalangeal joint in the dorsolateral or dorsomedial position, consisting of focal mucinous degeneration of the collagen of the dermis, is not a true cyst, lacking an epithelial wall, it does not communicate with the underlying synovial space. These are synonymous with synovial cysts, They often appear suddenly, commonly distal to the interphalangeal joint, around the nail fold and become semitranslucent or blister like as they expand.

Causes of Myxoid Cysts

Find common causes and risk factors of Myxoid Cysts :

  • The cause of the Myxoid Cysts is unknown.
  • Myxoid cysts often appear at the site of an old injury, sites of friction, and at sites of minor trauma.
  • Myxoid cysts are not derived from the joint or tendon sheath. They are not synovial cysts nor are they ganglia as commonly believed.

Signs and Symptoms of Myxoid Cysts

Sign and symptoms may include the following :

  • They have smooth and shiny surface and apper at the base of nail
  • These cysts vary in sizes. These cysts can extend up to a few millimeters across the length of the nail.
  • They can cause an individual some discomfort and pain.

Treatment for Myxoid Cysts

Treatment may include :

  • Myxoid cysts may be frozen with liquid nitrogen leaving a flat white scar.
  • Cortisone injections are sometimes effective in making a myxoid cyst go away.
  • Myxoid cysts can be removed surgically, but they have a high rate of recurrence.
  • Steroid injection.
  • Surgical removal.
  • Squeezing out its contents (make a hole with a sterile needle).
